As we continue to profile online banks, today’s subject is NOVA Bank. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, NOVA is a bit more extensive than many of the Internet-based banks we have examined thus far; products and services at NOVA include business banking, lending, and even investment management, such as brokerage accounts and financial and retirement planning.

Where some Internet banks focus primarily on “bare bones” consumer products–CDs and a couple of different savings accounts, and a checking account or two if you’re lucky–NOVA holds steady to the more expansive model common to brick-and-mortar financial institutions. In that sense, NOVA is a sort-of hybrid.

NOVA Bank’s slogan is “Client Driven Financial Services.” The bank seems to recognize that many of its clients are now demanding mobile and online banking services, rather than traditional outlets such as the branch/teller model. NOVA also is known for product diversity. For instance, its business checking offers include 5 different varieties of accounts, including more specialized products such as Analyzed Business Checking and a Not-for-Profit Checking account.

Yet NOVA also has the convenience of online banking services, extended to such items as e-statements, check reordering, and even placing stop payments on checks.

In summary, the glut of Internet banks often seem fairly cookie-cutter in nature; it’s easy enough to offer a few CDs and a basic savings account, but little else. NOVA is attempting to bridge the full-service bank concept with the outreach of online service. It may ultimately prove to be a difficult achievement, trying to be all things to all customers.
