In reviewing checking account products, I like to analyze not just rates and features, but also the quality of a bank’s service. With so many banks out there, you would think that great service would be a priority; online features and problem-solving customer representatives help to separate the great financial institutions from the merely adequate ones.

KeyBank seems to place a premium on service. In looking over KeyBank’s checking account homepage, one of the first things I noticed was some of the online tools. The bank provides links that tell you how to balance your checking account or avoid overdraft fees. KeyBank also has an “Easy Transfer Kit,” including a checklist for switching your funds to KeyBank. That is a nice touch, and one that shows the Cleveland, Ohio-based bank is attempting to educate (and retain) its customers, not just make a quick buck off of them.

So what about KeyBank’s premium checking account? Advantage Checking has some features that stand out. Including bonus rates on certificates of deposit and savings accounts, plus discounts on loans. Technically, Advantage Checking is a money market account, so you earn interest on your funds but the account has no limits on how many checks you can write, an attractive combination. You would need to keep a $10,000 balance in your KeyBank accounts (including retirement funds) to avoid a $15 monthly fee.

Which brings us to the debit card options. KeyBank is one of the institutions that is still offering a choice of debit card bonus programs, so Advantage Checking includes either a Gold Debit or KeyMiles card. The former has perks like extended warranties for certain purchases and roadside assistance, while the latter accrues bonus points with Continental Airlines. The KeyMiles card earns you one point per every $2 spent.

The few drawbacks that I see with KeyBank are fee-related. In addition to that monthly account fee, the bank will charge you $30 annually just to have the KeyMiles card. KeyBank also only refunds $6 per month for non-Key ATM withdrawals, which seems a bit stingy.

Still, KeyBank may be especially worth your while if you are looking to change banks. They seem to have a combination of service, online features, and debit card bonuses that many customers are looking for in a checking account.
