Q: Everyone I know has their bills paid online, but I haven’t set this up yet. How can I do this?
A: Online bill pay services can be very convenient, particularly for those persons who have trouble leaving their homes to go pay bills, or have trouble writing checks or filling out money orders. Many companies are now offering online bill pay and setting it up is usually very easy.
To start setting up online bill pay, first find the last statement for the bill you wish to pay online. There will most likely be a website listed somewhere on the bill. There may even be a dedicated website for bill paying only. Type in that URL and follow the prompts on the screen.
If you don’t have a computer, or cannot type or position a mouse well because of physical or other impairments, call the number listed on the statement for billing questions and concerns. Tell the representative who answers that you want to start online bill pay. She will help you set up your online bill pay account.
Once your account is set up, you will no longer have to worry about writing another check or making sure the check gets to the mailbox or post office. Each month, around the same time, your checking account will be debited for the amount of your bill. This figure will be sent to your bank by the company who is to be paid.
