EverBank is offering a high-yield checking account with a bevy of features and freebies. The Jacksonville, Florida- based Internet bank’s FreeNet Checking Account has a 3-month bonus rate of 2.25%, then tiered interest rates based on your balance.
FreeNet Checking has a minimum opening balance of $1500. There is no minimum balance to earn interest, however, and the account has no monthly fees–two nice (not to mention unusual) perks for a high-yield checking. FreeNet Checking gives you unlimited check writing and a Visa check card. Since the account is Internet-based, it makes sense that EverBank provides access through free online banking, mobile banking, and permits free depositing of checks from your home. Another solid bonus: FreeNet Checking refunds other banks’ ATM fees, so long as you maintain a $5000 balance during the given month. According to EverBank’s website, there is also overdraft protection available, although you have to qualify for it based on your credit.
Aside from the 2.25% bonus rate, FreeNet Checking’s current interest tiers (as of January 26, 2010) for first-Year Account annual percentage yields (APY) are: $50,000 – $99,999.99 1.46% APY, $25,000 – $49,999.99 1.21% APY, $10,000 – $24,999.99 1.17% APY and under $10,000 1.14% APY.
Overall, FreeNet Checking combines highly convenient features with an outstanding rate of interest. Although the rate is a variable one that can be changed at any time, EverBank does promise to keep your rate in the top 5% of similar accounts, nationally. BankShout will take a look at EverBank’s savings account choices in a future post.
